Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections

Some people get no symptoms with a UTI, but most will have at least some of the following:

  • Frequent urge to urinate
  • Painful or burning urination
  • Passing only a small amount of urine
  • Milky or cloudy urine
  • Foul smelling urine
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Blood may be visible, making the urine dark or reddish
  • Blood may be microscopic and found only by when urine is examined in a laboratory urine test (urinalysis)
  • General discomfort or “sick” feeling, such as being tired and/or shaky
  • Pain in the back or side below the ribs
  • Some women feel an uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone
  • Some men feel a fullness in the rectum
  • Pus in the urine or penile discharge in men may indicate urethritis
  • Fever, chills, nausea or vomiting may indicate pyelonephritis (kidney infection)
