Interstitial Cystitis

Symptoms

The symptoms of interstitial cystitis (IC) vary from person to person and even the same person may have different symptoms at different times. Sometimes symptoms simply go away by themselves; sometimes they return after a while. Often, women's symptoms worsen during menstruation. In general, symptoms range from mild discomfort, pressure, tenderness to intense pain in the bladder and surrounding pelvic area. Other possible symptoms include:

  • Urgent need to urinate (urgency)
  • Frequent need to urinate (frequency), up to 60 times a day in severe cases
  • Pain changing in intensity as the bladder fills with urine or empties
  • Irritated, scarred or stiff bladder wall
  • Glomerulations (pinpoint bleeding caused by recurrent irritation) on the bladder wall
  • Ulcers on the bladder wall
  • Pain during sexual intercourse or other sexual activities
Rarer symptoms reported by some patients include:
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Migraines
  • Allergic reactions
  • Gastrointestinal problems
IC maybe associated with some other chronic diseases and pain syndromes such as:
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Vulvar vestibulitis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
