Urology
Urology Residency Training Program
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry
Program Outline—Fifth Year (PGY-6)
In the fifth year (PGY-6) the urology chief resident spends six months at Strong Memorial Hospital and is responsible for the inpatient service, consultations in the outpatient areas, emergency department and the hospital, and participates more formally in student, intern, and junior resident instruction and team formation, with additional administrative responsibilities. The team consists of a PGY-6, PGY-3, full-time "hospitalist," physician's assistant, and surgical intern. The chief resident adds to surgical experience by participating in all major urologic surgeries and index cases, delegating procedures to a junior resident as appropriate. Research projects previously initiated may be continued and scientific contributions are prepared for presentation at regional or national meetings. The chief resident also plans (and runs) conferences and seminars.
The remaining six months are spent in charge of the urology service at Rochester General Hospital, with the help of the PGY-5 assistant chief resident and a full-time physician's assistant.
