Robert A. Mevorach , M.D.
Dr. Rob Mevorach will gladly tell you his personal philosophy: “Care
for each child as my own.” He’s spent more than ten
years in pediatric urology at Strong Health doing just that.
“We’re very lucky,” he says, “to have three full-time pediatric urologists in the Rochester area. That’s very rare for a city of this size. And we’re active in both important basic scientific research and in helping children get better – which is a greater priority.”
Dr. Mevorach will also explain why treating children is so different from treating adults. “Kids are not just small versions of adults. For example, we might need different diagnostic tests for children. An adult can lie still during a CAT scan or MRI, but a child may not. Also, a lot of pediatric urology is reconstructive – repairing or rebuilding congenital abnormalities. It can be almost like plastic surgery. Children actually handle surgery very well; they can heal faster than adults. But their tissue is more delicate, and we need to consider that during any procedure.”
That’s why our pediatric urologists research and use the least invasive techniques. We’re currently looking at a procedure for treating vesico-reteral reflux (a congenital abnormality that causes urine to flow from bladder back to the kidneys) that takes 30 minutes in a outpatient surgery instead of 3 days in the hospital.
Dr. Mevorach points out one last difference between treating adults and children. “We understand that when we’re treating children, we’re also ‘treating’ their parents and family. We’re very sensitive to this. We know parents are worried and we help them through it. Our number one priority is the care of their children.”
