Digital Mammography at the Highland Breast Care Center

Common Questions about Digital Mammography

With the addition of digital mammography, the Highland Breast Care Center offers patients the very latest in imaging technology. While this type of mammogram may not be appropriate for everyone, it may be valuable for patients with specific conditions or who require image-guided procedures. We'd like to answer a few of your basic questions about digital mammography and invite you to contact us at 585-341-6869 for additional questions.

What is digital mammography?

Digital mammography is a system of converting x-rays into electric signals, similar to those in a digital camera. These electrical signals produce images that can be viewed on a computer or printed on special film to look like a regular mammogram.

Is a digital mammogram clinically better than the traditional mammogram?

The procedure and appearance of the machine and even the image produced is essentially the same as a traditional standard film mammogram--the advantage really comes from the ability to manipulate the image electronically. Providers can adjust the contrast, zoom in focus on different parts of the breast without having to take additional images.

Other advantages?

Providers will also be able to store images and transfer images electronically, which facilitates quick and easy transfer, retrieval and remote evaluation by a distant specialist. The process is also simply faster than standard film, which will ultimately require less time for a patient screening.

  • Manipulation of the Images–don't need to take as many pictures, less repeats and return visits
  • Time–quicker to do–process complete in only 10 minutes
  • Transfer–easily stored and shared with specialists
  • Reduced exposure to radiation–60% less
