Herbal Remedies

For women who are not at a moderate to high risk for menopause-related heart disease and osteoporosis, but would like to alleviate some of the symptoms of menopause, certain herbal remedies may be the answer. Herbs have been shown to reduce and even alleviate the following menopause symptoms: hot flashes, insomnia, mood swings, vaginal and bladder infections, fatigue, forgetfulness, and headache. Keep in mind that, in the U.S., herbal remedies are not regulated as prescription and non-prescription drugs are, and have not been researched as widely. Due to various side effects, do not use herbal remedies as part of your treatment plan without first consulting your health care provider.

One popular herbal remedy is black cohosh, and is currently under clinical trial to test its effectiveness in treating menopausal symptoms. This herb is often used to treat premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cramps, digestive problems, and morning sickness. In menopause, it may effectively treat hot flashes, sleep problems, and mood swings. This herb is also marketed under the brand name Remifemin. In clinical tests, this herb has been shown to reduce or alleviate symptoms in a significant percentage of women, without the risk of endometrial cancers.

Other herbal remedies are also attributed with relieving menopausal symptoms, but many are associated with significant side effects. Please speak with your health care provider for more information on these treatment options.
