Laparotomy

A laparotomy is an open exploration of the abdomen and pelvis. The abdominal incision used is similar to that which is performed at the time of a cesarean section. The laparotomy is reserved for the most extensive surgical procedures.

Extensive procedures that may require laparotomy include:
  • Fallopian tube reconstruction
  • Removal of uterine fibroids
  • Adhesiolysis
  • Treatment or excision of endometriosis
  • Reconstructive surgery of birth defects involving the uterus and vagina
  • Treatment of ovarian cysts
  • Repair or removal of hydrosalpinx (damaged fallopian tube)
  • Tubal anastomosis (reversal of tubal ligation or sterilization)
  • Treatment of ectopic pregnancy
