Bathing Your Baby

In the beginning, bath time can seem like an intimidating time for both parent and baby, but with a little practice, you will get the hang of it. And before long, bath time will be a fun part of your day!

Note: Only sponge bathe your baby until the cord (and circumcision ring) falls off. Simply use a lukewarm, moistened washcloth. Wash baby's face and hands frequently throughout the day, and thoroughly clean genitals at each diaper change.

Tub baths

  1. Stay with your baby every second during a bath and when dressing.
  2. Gather all necessary supplies. You will need: a soft washcloth, cottonballs, a soft towel, a clean diaper (or two), clean clothes, bar of mild soap or liquid baby soap (after the baby is 4 weeks old).
  3. For a tub, since a baby is tiny, use either a kitchen sink or an infant bath tub to bathe your baby in. Choose a place that is safe, warm, and free from drafts.
  4. Fill the tub with 2-3 inches of water that feels warm but not hot (about 90 degrees Fahrenheit).
  5. Bring your baby to the bath area and undress him/her completely. If your baby cries when totally undressed, undress and wash only one are at a time.
  6. Gradually slip your baby into the tub feet first, using one hand to support his/her neck and head. Pour cupfuls of bathwater over him/her regularly during the bath so he/she doesn't get too cold.
  7. Use mild soap sparingly (too much can dry out baby's skin) as you wash your baby from top to bottom, and front to back. Wash his/her scalp with a wet soapy cloth. use moistened cottonballs (no soap) to clean baby's eyes and face.
  8. Rinse your baby thoroughly with a clean washcloth.
  9. Lift your baby out of the tub with one hand supporting his/her neck and head and the other hand supporting his/her bottom, with your fingers around one thigh.
  10. Wrap your baby in a towel and pat him/her dry. For a slightly older baby (4-6 weeks old), if his/her skin tends to be dry, you may apply a mild baby lotion after the bath. Then diaper, dress and snuggle your baby.
