Daily Routine

Newborns do not come with a specific schedule to follow, and typically will not establish a regular pattern of feeding and sleeping until close to three or four months of age. In those first few weeks, you will feel as if your child has day and night confused, and has no concept of time at all! During this time, it is best to be flexible, sleep when your baby sleeps, get help with meals and daily chores, and not schedule too many activities. In time, life will settle into a routine again. As much as possible, relax and enjoy this time with your new baby.

What Your Baby Needs

On a daily (sometimes hourly!) basis, your baby needs to:

  • be held
  • be dry
  • be bathed and clean
  • be warm (but not too warm)
  • be fed
  • sleep

The main way a baby communicates his/her needs is through crying, but as you get to know your baby, you will begin to recognize other signs of his/her needs, and will even begin to differentiate between different types of cries.
