Preparation for a Cesarean Birth
Your health care provider will discuss the need for and procedures involved in a Cesarean birth with you once it is determined that this is the best approach for you. You will meet with the anesthetist to discuss and learn about anesthesia. You will need to take nothing by mouth for the 8 hours before your surgery. Once you arrive at the hospital, you will change into a hospital gown. Your abdomen and/or the upper part of your pubic hair may be shaved. An IV will be started and will stay in place until after the surgery when you are able to eat and drink. A urinary catheter may be placed in your bladder. It is sometimes possible to wait until your regional anesthesia has been started for your catheter to be placed. The catheter is usually removed the day following your surgery. You will be taken to the operating room from your labor room or the triage area in the case of a scheduled Cesarean birth. Your coach will be given a scrub suit and head and foot coverings before entering the operating room.
