Postpartum - Physical Side Effects

When To Call Your Health Care Provider

The days following the birth of your baby will bring some temporary physical discomfort. However, pay attention to warning signs that you may need additional medical attention. If any of the following occurs, please call your health care provider immediately:

  • Temperature over 100 degrees F or 38 degrees C (taken orally)
  • Heavy vaginal bleeding beyond the first couple of days following birth or passing large clots
  • Foul smelling vaginal discharge
  • Pain that gets worse over time and does not go away with rest and/or medication
  • Pain, burning, or difficulty passing urine
  • Painful breast lumps (whether or not redness appears)
  • Incision that gets red, drains or opens
  • Warm, painful areas in either leg
