Fatigue: Find the Cause First
“Low energy” is a symptom, not a diagnosis — and it has a long list of common, treatable causes: poor or insufficient sleep, thyroid dysfunction, iron or B12 deficiency, low testosterone, blood-sugar issues, depression, medication effects, and more. MOTS-c: The Mitochondrial Peptide
The peptide most tied to energy at the cellular level is MOTS-c, a mitochondrial-derived peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome itself. Mitochondria are your cells’ power plants, so a signal that comes from them is a natural focus for energy metabolism.
MOTS-c’s best-studied action is activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the cell’s central energy sensor. Switching on AMPK shifts cells toward taking up glucose and burning fat more efficiently — broadly the same pathway engaged by exercise, which is why MOTS-c is often described as an “exercise-mimetic.”[1][2]
How Strong Is the Evidence?
We’re candid about the gap here. The bulk of MOTS-c evidence comes from cell and animal studies, where it improves insulin sensitivity, protects against diet-induced obesity, and supports metabolic flexibility, with AMPK activation as the recurring mechanism.[1][3]
Human data are far more limited. Circulating MOTS-c rises with exercise and differs across metabolic states, which supports its biological relevance — but there are no large randomized trials showing that administering MOTS-c produces meaningful energy or clinical benefit in people.[2]
