Refractive Surgery Center

Joseph Stamm, O.D., F.A.A.O.

Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology

Dr. Joseph Stamm joined the University of Rochester's Department of Ophthalmology faculty as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology in May 2001 after being in private optometric practice in Rochester for 19 years. A second generation optometrist, Dr. Stamm's practice specialized in contact lenses and caring for patient suffering eye problems related to the use of computers. With the StrongVision team, Dr. Stamm provides pre- and post-operative care to refractive surgery patients. He is also involved with coordination of the clinical research performed at the center.

A leader in organized optometry, Dr. Stamm has been the President of the Rochester Optometric Society and the New York State Optometric Association. He served as Optometric Editor of Prospectus: the Journal of the New York State Optometric Association for over six years. Since completing his training at the State University of New York's State College of Optometry, Dr. Stamm has been a member of numerous professional advisory boards in his field.

Among his many professional affiliations, Dr. Stamm is a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Optometry and was the Academy's first Clinical Diplomate in Refractive Technology. The Academy's Diplomate designation is awarded to practitioners who have proven advance study in a particular specialty field via written and practical examination. The Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the Academy, which awards the Refractive Technology Diplomate, has fewer than 200 Diplomates world wide. He was also a charter member of both the Optometric Council on Refractive Technology and of the Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the American Optometric Association. He presented the results of StrongVision research on customizing LASIK flap thickness in 2003 to the American Academy of Optometry, and he is regularly quoted in publications such as Primary Care Optometry News on topics related to refractive surgery and wavefront technology.

Dr. Stamm is among a very small group of optometrists who specialize in refractive surgical care. He is actively engaged in educating other optometrists in the area of refractive surgery, wavefront technology and advanced technology corneal analysis. He has lectured across the country, teaching other doctors about the technology developed at the University of Rochester. He has also presented Internet-based educational seminars for fellow doctors around the world.
