How Do I Burp My Baby?

During feeding a baby takes in air that goes into his or her tummy. That is why it is necessary to help your baby release that air by burping him or her. Have a washcloth or burp cloth handy just in case your baby spits up some milk. Try burping your baby when you change breasts or after 1-2 ounces of formula, and at the end of the feeding.

Some techniques you may try for burping your baby:

  • Sit your baby on your lap and hold the baby’s chin and head in one hand. Gently pat or rub the baby’s back.
  • Lay your baby on his or her tummy on your lap, and gently rub or pat your baby’s back.
  • Place your baby on your upper chest or choulder and pat or rub the back gently.
