Jean V. Joseph, M.D.

Dr. Joseph specializes in what he calls “key hole surgery,” minimally invasive operations, using small incisions (“key holes”) and equally small instruments, that achieve the same results as traditional surgery. These include laparoscopic prostatectomy (removal of the prostate), laparoscopic partial or full nephrectomy (partial or complete removal of a kidney) and laparoscopic pyeloplasty (removal of obstructions in the connection between the kidney and the ureter).

“Traditional surgery,” says Dr. Joseph, “involves large incisions which require longer hospital stays and longer recovery periods. Minimally invasive surgery can significantly reduce hospital stays, pain and discomfort, and convalescence, so patients can get back to their normal routine much more quickly. Strong Memorial Hospital is one of the few places in the country that does this kind of surgery regularly.”

Dr. Joseph is also involved in two important clinical trials of prostate cancer prevention methods and a third trial testing patient reactions to a ureteral stent (a device that keeps the ureter open).

After his medical education in Rochester, Dr. Joseph spent time in private practice in Orlando, Florida, traveled to London for additional training in reconstructive urology and laparoscopy, and then returned to Rochester and Strong Hospital. “I always wanted to be a doctor, and a surgeon,” he says. “During the summer after college in Boston, I spent some time in Rochester and met people at the medical school who I thought could help me develop these interests. I also enjoyed the atmosphere of Rochester.

“Now,” he adds, “more than anything else in my professional life, I enjoy actually making a difference in someone’s life. It’s an opportunity few things can give you. At Strong, we’re actively researching ways to deliver the best care possible. Our goal is to work as a team with our patients to help them decide on and take them through the best course of treatment.”
